Salman Khan in trial

Sallu faces 10 years in prison for hit-and-run as court rules he will face trial for culpable homicide

By Mail Today Reporter
Published: 1 February 2013 | dailymail.co.uk

After almost a decade of dilly-dallying, the law finally seems to be catching up with actor Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

A Mumbai court has ruled that Salman will be tried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the case.

The actor, who is currently being tried under Section 304 A (rash and negligent driving), has been asked to be present in court on March 11.

Salman could face up to 10 years in jail if found guilty.

The metropolitan court has decided to inquire into the complaint by social activist Santosh Daundkar, who had alleged that delays in the trial had stretched the case to over a decade.

He also claimed that the prosecution had joined hands with the actor and that the police produced false evidence and manipulated facts to drag the case.

Bureaucrat-turned-lawyer Abha Singh, who is Daundkar's counsel, said: "While other high-profile cases were over within a few years, the case against Salman has been dragging for 10 years.

"The medical officers produced before the court were not the ones to whom summons were issued. There has been a manipulation of evidence."

The police had filed a report on Wednesday, refuting the allegations. The police report stated that the investigators could not be blamed if the medical officers, who were working in the hospital during the case, had been transferred over the years.

"The hospital had assigned others to depose before the court. Hence the prosecution has not given false information to the court or caused any delay in the trial," the report stated.

Salman's Toyota Land Cruiser had rammed intothe American Express bakery in Bandra on September 28, 2002.

A pavement dweller was killed while four others were injured in the accident. Salman was initially booked on a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder but he had petitioned the Bombay High Court against the charge and said he had not intended to kill.

The high court had ruled that Section 304 (part II) of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) could not be applied in the case and the actor should be tried under IPC Section 304 A instead.

The court had, accordingly, framed charges against Salman under sections 304 A, 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing minor injuries), 338 (causing major injuries) and 427 (negligence) of IPC.

NDTV: Letters addressed to Bollywood might just reach your favourite stars

Article written by: Gitanjali Roy | April 18, 2013 | movies.ndtv.com

A postman delivered this letter to Bollywood actress Pooja Bhatt. This picture was posted on Twitter by @PoojaB1972

If you need to get in touch with actress-director Pooja Bhatt and don't know her contact details, a letter addressed to Bollywood, Bollywood Films, Mumbai will always find her. And since you won't know the pin code either, just put Mumbai again.

The postman delivered her mail yesterday, and it included this optimistic missive.

Pooja tweeted: Indian Postal Service, I salute you! Can't believe a letter actually reached me with this address printed on it! : )

She didn't seem to mind being referred to as The Pooja Bhatt.

We're hoping she wrote back to the fan.

Who's next? Shah Rukh Khan? But everyone knows where he lives. Or do they...

Aamir Khan listed in TIME's 100 Most Influential People in the World list.

Article by Sonal Bhadoria , IndiaTimes | April 18, 2013

US based news magazine -TIME's annual survey of the 100 most influential people in the world for the year 2013 is out and guess who landed an exclusive cover with the magazine. Billed as a film star and activist by the magazine, the Bollywood actor and host of the television show-Satyamev Jayate has been profiled by world celebrated music composer A.R Rahman. 2 other Indians have made it to the list ,namely our Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram who has been listed as a Titan and Delhi based human-rights lawyer Vrinda Grover who has been listed as a Pioneer.

What is more remarkable is that the magazine has selected just 7 people out of the 100 chosen, to each have their separate cover. And Aamir Khan is one of the select 7. The other 6 include teenage Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, inventor and entrepreneur Elon Musk and Chinese tennis star Li Na. The covers vary internationally, but in the U.S. 4 different versions will hit the newsstands.

P. Chidambarm has been praised for his 'unsurpassed experience', strong work ethic, a no non-sense approach towards governance among other things. A noted human rights lawyer and more importantly an advocate for women's rights in India-Vrinda Grover has been lauded for her efforts post the tragic Delhi gang-rape case. The magazine notes that "her determination to force an often recalcitrant political and legal system to change was evident in these past few heated months, as a particularly tragic rape in Delhi brought women’s rights center stage." It also states, " In the conservative backlash that followed the waves of women’s protests, Grover’s voice — loud, uncompromising — was raised again and again in the rambunctious theater of Indian TV."

Another noteworthy point is that Aamir hasn't been listed under the 'Artists' category but under the section 'Pioneers'. Clearly his social activism has trumped his Bollywood credentials this time. The 100 influential people have been classified under the categories Titans, Leaders, Artists, Pioneers and Icons.

In a glowing profile of the actor, A.R Rahman writes much about Aamir's sense of social responsibility and lauds his effort to make blockbuster movies that tackle themes of poverty and education. Terming his TV show Satyamev Jayate- part journalism and part talk show, that confronts India’s deepest social ills, from sexual abuse to caste discrimination, Rahman praises Aamir for "showing the courage to ask hard questions". "Aamir has started a movement that will help change the world in which Indians live.", he adds.

This is Aamir's second TIME cover. He had earlier been the focus of a cover story 'Khan Quest' in the Asian edition of the magazine in 2012.

BBC News: Court delays Sanjay Dutt jail return because of film commitments

Bollywood näyttelijä Sanjay Duttin 5-vuoden vankilatuomiota lykättiin kuukaudella. Onko Mumbaissa puhaltamassa uudet tasa-arvoisemmat tuulet, kun isot starat joutuvatkin vankilaan?  Aiheesta lisää mm. täältä.

India's top court has given Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt more time before he returns to jail for firearms offences at the time of 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.

Supreme Court judges ordered Dutt to surrender in a month after he said work commitments meant he needed more time.

Dutt was convicted in 2006 of buying firearms from bombers who attacked Mumbai. He spent 20 months in jail.

He was found guilty of illegally possessing a rifle and a pistol but cleared of conspiracy.

The son of a Hindu father and a Muslim mother, Dutt said the weapons were necessary in order to defend his family during the Hindu-Muslim rioting of 1993 which followed the destruction by Hindu zealots of the Babri mosque in the northern town of Ayodhya.

The Mumbai bombings killed 257 people and wounded 713 others.

Last month judges ordered Dutt to surrender by 18 April after reducing his sentence to five years from six.

Dutt, 53, had urged the court to allow him to finish work on a number of films before returning to prison.

Reports say the actor had told the court that it would take at least six months to complete the films.

The judges said on Wednesday that Dutt has to return to prison within four weeks.

Dutt, one of Bollywood's most bankable stars, is hugely popular for his role as a loveable gangster in the Munnabhai movies. He has also dabbled in politics.

In 2006, a special anti-terror court convicted 100 people for the blasts. Twelve were given the death penalty and 20 others sentenced to life imprisonment.

Dutt, the most high-profile among the convicts, was originally charged with five offences, including criminal conspiracy and possession of illegal weapons.
