Bollywood movie Once upon a time in Mumbaai Again on 25.08.2013 at Kino K-13

Intia-keskus is screening tomorrow Sunday 25th of August Bollywood action movie Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Again in Kino K-13 theater. The leading actors are Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Imran Khan with Sonali Bendre in a supporting role. Vidya Balan is making a special appearance. The film is directed by Milan Luthria, written by Rajat Arora. The producers are Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor, Tanuj Garg (co-producer) and Hussain Shaikh (executive producer). Cinematography by Ayananka Bose, Editing by Akiv Ali. Music by Pritam Chakraborty and Sandeep Shirodkar (background music). Lyrics by Rajat Arora.

Ranbir Kapoorin elokuvia Rakkautta ja Anarkiaa festivaalilla tänä vuonna

Tänä vuonna Rakkautta ja Anarkiaa näyttää kaksi Ranbir Kapoorin elokuvaa: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani ja Barfi.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani -elokuvan kuvaus R&A:n sivuilla:

"Intialainen romanttinen komedia, joka saa varmasti Bollywood-fiilistelijöiden tanssijalan vipattamaan. Elokuvassa nörtähtävä Naima tapaa vanhan opiskelukaverinsa, vauhdikkaan Bunnyn, joka opettaa Naimalle, kuinka pidetään hauskaa. Miespääosaa näyttelee Ranbir Kapoor, joka on tällä hetkellä Intiassa kuuminta hottia, ja joka nähdään myös toisessa R&A-leffassa, Barfissa (niin ikään romanttinen komedia)."

Elokuvaa tähdittävät siis Ranbir Kapoor (Kapoor-klaanin tulokas) ja Deepika Padukone. Ihastuttava Madhuri Dixit, joka tunnetaan yhtenä taidokkaimmista tanssijoista Bollywoodissa, tekee cameon Ghagra -musikaalikohtauksessa. Elokuvan parasta antia ovatkin musikaalikohtaukset. Itse tarina on valitettavasti moneen kertaan nähty sillä erotuksella että päähenkilö ei ole mikään kirkasotsainen sankari vaan hän kuvastaa tämän hetken nuorison tuntemuksia individualismista. Ja mitä Barfin tuomiseen tulee, niin argh..!

Tässäpä dilemma, kuinka kertoa teille lukijoille innostuneesti että menkää hei katsomaan Bollywood-elokuvia, kun niitä kerran tuodaan Suomeen ja samalla todeta että noista elokuvista toinen on saanut huonot arvostelut ja toinen on nostanut paljon kohua Intiassa plagioimissyytösten takia.

Barfi näyttää ja kuulostaa eurooppalaiselta taide-elokuvalta. Se on taatusti upeaa katseltavaa ja kuunneltavaa ja uskon että elokuva on esimerkillisen hyvä intialaiseksi elokuvaksi. Mutta entäpä se fakta, että osa elokuvan parhaimmista kohtauksista on plagioitu lähes kuva kuvalta? Elokuvan ääniraita on otettu Ameliesta? Kun Barfi valittiin Oscar-kisaan, lukuisat elokuvantekijät huolestuivat siitä millaisen kuvan länsimaat saavat Intian elokuvateollisuudesta. Kaikki tietävät kuinka huolettomasti intialaiset plagioivat muun maalaisia elokuvia ja väittävät tarinoita omakseen. Muistan kun Black (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, 2005) sai paljon kehuja Intiassa erikoisesta tarinastaan. Elokuvan ensimmäinen puolisko on kopioitu Ihmeidentekijästä (The Miracle Worker, Arthur Penn, 1962). Ja tämä ei todellakaan ole yksittäinen kerta vaan täysin normaalia toimintaa. En jaksa ymmärtää mihin on kadonnut elokuvantekijöiden itsekunnioitus ja miksi yleisö ei välitä asiasta. Tämä on aihe, josta voisin paasata vaikka kuinka kauan, mutta ehkä palaan takaisin asiaan ja kerron teille Barfista.

Barfin pääosissa ovat Ranbir Kapoor ja Priyanka Chopra. Elokuva kertoo kolmen ihmisen tarinan. Kuulo- ja puhevammainen poika rakastuu nuoreen naiseen Shrutiin, joka tunteistaan huolimatta päättää mennä naimisiin sosiaalisesti hyväksyttävämmän miehen kanssa. Vuosien kuluttua Shruti tapaa pojan uudelleen ja päättää auttaa häntä etsimään Jhilmiliä, pojan uutta rakkautta, joka piileskelee poliiseja. Shrutia näyttelevä eteläintialainen Ileana tekee elokuvassa Bollywood debyyttinsä. Teksti IMDB:stä.

Here's what's been written about Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in Love & Anarchy festival's web page:

"This Indian romantic comedy is sure to make Bollywood lovers of all ages feel like dancing. Naima is a nerdie young woman whose former class mate teaches her how to have fun. Ranbir Kapoor, who is one of the most popular actors India at the moment, plays the leading male character. Kapoor can be seen in another Love & Anarchy film at the festival Barfi, which is also an Indian romantic comedy."

Stars of the Yeh Jawaani Hai Dewaani are Ranbir Kapoor (newcomer from Kapoor clan) and Deepika Padukone. The lovely Madhuri Dixit, who's known for one of the talented dancers in Bollywood, is making a cameo in the Ghagra -musical scene. The best part of movie are indeed the musical scenes. The plot on the other hand is same old with one exception; The main character is no hero but he reflects the feelings of today's youth about individualism. And what comes to screening of Barfi.. argh!

Here's a dilemma! It's so rare to see Bollywood movies in Finland, so I should be excited and tell you to go and watch these films and yet these two films are questionable choice, the first has gathered bad reviews and the second has been accused for plagiarism.  

Barfi looks and sounds like an European art movie. I bet it's beautiful to see and hear and I believe the film is exceptionally good film as Indian. But what about the fact that part of the best scenes in the movie are copied nearly frame by frame? Soundtrack is taken from Amelie? When Barfi was chosen to the Oscar race, many Indian filmmakers were worried of what kind of image Western world is having about the Indian film industry. I remember when Black (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, 2005) got lot of praises about the unique story. The first part of the movie is copied from The Miracle Worker (Arthur Penn, 1962). And this is not just one time but completely normal thing to do in India. I cannot understand where is the self-respect of the filmmakers and why the audience is not interested. This is a subject that I could talk for hours but maybe I just go to the point and start telling you about Barfi.

The leading actors of Barfi are Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. Set in the 1970s in a pretty corner of India, Barfi! is the story of three young people who learn that love can neither be defined nor contained by society's norms of normal and abnormal. Barfi, a hearing and speech impaired boy falls in love with Shruti. In spite of her deep affection for Barfii, Shruti gives into societal and parental pressure to marry a 'normal' man and lead a 'normal' life. Many years later their paths cross once again when Barfi, now in love with Jhilmil, is on the run from the police. Barfi is desperately seeking Jhilmil, who has gone missing. Shruti's realization that Jhilmil is autistic makes her recognize that true love is really blind. Caught in a cat and mouse game, in the search for the girl Barfi loves, Shruti realizes that she is still in love with him. She must now choose between her happiness. Love and Anarchy festival on 19-29.9.2013. The festival catalogue, which is published on September 6th, provides information about all HIFF films in English as well. The ticket sale for individual screenings starts on September 12th.

Bollywood-tanssitunnit Turussa syksyllä 2013

Teija Aholan vetämät Bollywood-tunnit jatkuvat syksyllä 2013 maanantaisin 1-1,5 tunnin pituisina. Ensimmäinen puolituntinen tekniikkaa, seuraava puolikas helppoa koreografiaa ja viimeinen puolikas haastavampaa koreografiaa. Paikkana toimii jälleen Moon Dance Studio (Karjakatu 35b, Turku).

Ensimmäinen tunti (tekniikka + helppo koreografia) sopii hyvin aloittelijoille.  Kauemmin tanssineille taas suositellaan puolentoista tunnin kurssia, jossa päästään opettelemaan vaativampaa koreografiaa.

Hinnat (opiskelija-ale 10%):
1 h: 15 krt 120 €, 10 krt 90 €, 5 krt 45 €
1,5 h: 15 krt 150 €, 10 krt 105 €, 5 krt 52,50 €

Indian Independence day celebration in Savio on 18.08.2013

New screening of Chennai Express 18.8.2013

Great news! The screening of Chennai Express was sold out last Sunday and because there were many people who didn't get in, Intia-keskus decided to have another screening! This is wonderful, because the movie is awesome. I'm even planning to go to see it second time! :)

The main plot is quite common: "Rahul embarks on a journey to a small town in Tamil Nadu to fulfill the last wish of his grandfather: to have his ashes immersed in the Holy water of Rameshwaram. En route, he falls in love with the daughter of a don (gangster). As they find love through this journey in the exuberant lands of South India, an unanticipated drive awaits them." But the magic in the film is an excellent acting by Deepika Padukone and Shahrukh Khan. Finally we have a director who wants his actors to act and not to just hang around. Chennai Express is basically comedy film which has action scenes. And even the action scenes has lots of comedy in it. For people who have seen many Bollywood films, specially Shahrukh's ones, the film offers bunch of inside jokes. The movie also has lots of jokes which just continues and continues.. and just when you think how long they're going to lengthen the joke, there will come another one. And it works!

The first half of the movie is action comedy, (more of comedy than action) and there's only one dance scene. After the Intermission the movie starts very slowly, having lots of romance, drama and finally it turns to violent action (which is quite common in Bollywood). On the second half of the movie there's couple really beautiful musical scenes which has been shot and edited nicely. Nowadays it's rare to have a film which has lots of good songs in it and this film has it. Well, I like the songs of Chennai Express, they are catchy and make you smile.

So if you want to be entertained, this is your movie! :)
